With enough interest and players to have both a Junior Varsity and Varsity team (the first time in years), the girls Water Polo team is starting the 2022-2023 season off strong! They had their first scrimmage of the season before Fall Break against Carpinteria High. Although the score was not tallied, the Varsity team put up a fight and showed great skill and development since last season. The Junior Varsity team outplayed Carp High’s JV team, shown through Cate’s constant grit and determination throughout the game and many goals scored both from breakaways and plays that the team had been practicing the week before. Considering that this was the first water polo game that many new players have ever played, it was a great first scrimmage!
On Thursday December 1st, both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams had their first games of the season against Buena. Although Buena was in a higher division than Cate, and these games against were not league games, both teams played a well fought match. The Varsity team lost 18-1, but showed significant improvement in the second half. Liz Sutter ‘23 scored Cate’s only goal, with an assist from Caroline Keohane ‘24. The Junior Varsity team lost only 5-4 with many brand new players in which this was their very first game. Claire Clark ‘24, Lylie Bechtel ‘23, and Coco Kliman ‘26 all scored!
When asked what their favorite part of being on the water polo team was, one of the players responded, “The community, coaches, and senior leadership make the team a lot more loving and impactful environment to learn and play in.” Not only is water polo a very difficult contact sport that requires stamina and high sports IQ, but it also requires a strong team bond with great coaches, and it is clear that the Cate girls water polo team has just that!
Both the Varsity and JV teams have lots of future games after winter break that can be found on the game schedule on the Cate School Website. Some of these matches include home games for both teams against Pacifica High School on Tuesday January 10th and another home game for the Varsity team against Foothill Technology on Thursday January 12th. Come out and support!
